What is Floor Marking Tape?

Line Marking Australia installs floor marking tape in warehouses, factories, cold rooms and freezers. Tape suits sites where paint can't cure, layouts that change, and jobs that must fit a short shutdown. For heavy forklift traffic, paint or epoxy usually lasts longer. We'll tell you honestly which suits your floor.

You need lines on the floor, but you can't shut the site for days. Or the room is below freezing and paint won't cure. Or your layout keeps changing and you're sick of grinding off old lines.

That's when floor marking tape makes sense. It goes down fast, you can walk on it straight away, and it comes up when you need to move things.

When floor marking tape beats paint

  • Cold rooms and freezers. Most floor paints won't cure properly in the cold. Cold-rated tapes can go down with the room still running, depending on the product.
  • Temporary or changing layouts. Tape lifts out when racking, work cells or storage areas move.
  • Short shutdowns. There's no drying time, so areas are back in use straight after.
  • 5S and lean projects. Tape is handy for marking tool spots, bins, carts and work cells while you trial a layout.
  • Food and clean areas. No paint fumes or overspray during the install.

When paint or epoxy is the better choice

Tape isn't right for every floor. Heavy forklift traffic, pallet jacks turning on the spot and hard wheels will lift and tear tape edges. In busy aisles and at turning points, paint or epoxy usually lasts longer and costs less over time.

Many sites use both: epoxy in high-traffic aisles and tape in areas that change. We'll walk the floor with you and show you which is which.

Types of floor marking tape

Heavy-duty PVC tape

The everyday choice for walkways, work cells and storage zones. It comes in safety colours and hazard stripes, and handles foot traffic and light trolleys well.

Aluminium-backed tape

A tougher option with a metal layer. It stands up better to pallet jacks and lighter forklift traffic, and some products are made for cold rooms.

Anti-slip tape

A gritty surface for ramps, steps, dock edges and wet areas. It adds grip where people walk, as well as marking the edge.

We also lay corner pieces, footprints, T and L shapes and dashed tape for pallet and bin positions.

Surface prep makes or breaks tape

Tape is only as good as the floor under it. Dust, oil, curing compounds and moisture all stop it sticking.

  1. Strip. Remove old tape, glue and loose paint.
  2. Clean. Sweep and degrease the floor.
  3. Dry. Let it dry fully, or use tape made for damp or cold floors.
  4. Lay and roll. Lay the tape and roll it down firmly so the adhesive grips.

Removing old floor tape

Old tape leaves glue behind, and torn edges become a trip risk. We lift old tape, remove the adhesive residue and clean the floor before laying new lines. If old painted lines need to go too, we remove them first.

For a Brisbane cold store in Hemmant, we removed the old walkway lines in a freezer room and replaced them with 50 mm yellow tape.

Tape colours and widths

Australia has no single mandatory colour code for floor marking, as AS 1318 was withdrawn in 2017. What matters is a clear plan used the same way across your site. Many sites use yellow for walkways and traffic lanes, red for fire equipment, and other colours for storage, quality hold or waste areas.

50 mm tape suits walkway edges and small zones. Wider tape works for main aisles that need to be seen from further away.

Compliance Standards

Model WHS Laws

Workplaces must manage the risk of forklifts and people mixing. Clearly marked walkways and zones are a common control. In Victoria, the OHS Act 2004 applies.

AS 1319 Safety Signs

AS 1319 covers safety signs for the workplace. Floor symbols and signs are designed to match. AS 1318 was withdrawn in 2017, so we work to a consistent site colour plan.

AS 4586 Slip Resistance

AS 4586 classifies the slip resistance of pedestrian surfaces. Anti-slip tape adds grip on ramps, steps and wet areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the floor. Tape is better for cold rooms, changing layouts and short shutdowns, because there is no drying time. Paint or epoxy is better under heavy forklift traffic. Line Marking Australia often uses both on one site.

Yes, with tape made for cold conditions. Most floor paints will not cure properly in the cold, so cold-rated tape is often the practical choice. Some products can be laid with the room still running.

It depends on traffic, the tape type and the floor prep. Tape in walkways and storage zones can last well. Tape in forklift aisles and turning points wears much faster, so paint or epoxy usually suits those spots better.

Australia has no single mandatory floor colour code, as AS 1318 was withdrawn in 2017. Many sites use yellow for walkways and traffic lanes and red for fire equipment. We help you set a site colour plan and stick to it.

We lift the old tape, remove the glue residue and clean the floor so new tape or paint can bond. Old painted lines can be removed first if the layout is changing.

50 mm is common for walkways, work cells and smaller zones. Wider tape, such as 75 or 100 mm, suits aisles and main routes that need to be seen from further away. We match the width to the job.

Price depends on the metres of tape, the tape type, how much old tape or paint has to come up, the floor condition and your shutdown window. Send a floor plan or photos through our quote form for a price.
