Revesby's Marco Avenue Industrial Carparks Have Bituminous Primer Bleeding Through Old Asphalt Into New Overlay Sections
Revesby's older industrial carparks on Marco Avenue and Milperra Road have asphalt that was resurfaced with a thin overlay applied over an existing base that was primed with bituminous tack coat. On hot summer days, the bituminous tack coat can soften and bleed upward through a thin overlay — a phenomenon known as bleeding or flushing in road pavement engineering.
A Milperra Road carpark had visibly dark, shiny patches on the asphalt surface in the sun-exposed central bays during a late January visit. The shiny patches were bituminous bleeding — warm bitumen from the tack coat migrating through the thin overlay to the surface. Pull-off testing on the bleeding zones: 0.8 MPa. The bituminous film at the surface was creating a weak adhesion interface.
Bleeding patches require surface absorption treatment — a dry aggregate broadcast (fine sand or granite chips) pressed into the bleeding surface to absorb the excess bitumen and restore surface texture. After the aggregate absorbed the bleeding and the surface cooled, pull-off reached 1.5 MPa. Then we marked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Revesby Marco Avenue industrial and Milperra Road commercial carparks are part of our Canterbury-Bankstown schedule. Bituminous bleeding assessment on summer sessions in sun-exposed Revesby carparks — tack coat bleeding through thin overlays creates a weak adhesion surface that must be treated before marking. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability. Fixed pricing, Transport NSW approved.
Bituminous tack coat (typically a sprayed bitumen emulsion) is applied between old and new asphalt layers to create adhesion between them. If the new overlay is thin (less than 30mm) and the tack coat application rate was excessive, the excess tack coat has nowhere to go under thermal expansion and migrates upward through the overlay. Hot summer temperatures soften the bitumen enough for this upward migration to occur. It's a pavement construction issue, not a weathering defect.
The dry aggregate treatment absorbs the excess bitumen at the surface and restores texture, allowing marking to adhere. It doesn't address the root cause — the excessive tack coat below. In subsequent hot summers, bleeding may recur in the same zones as additional tack coat migrates upward. For persistent bleeding carparks, a slurry seal or micro-surfacing treatment applied over the full affected area provides a more durable surface restoration.
Bituminous bleeding appears as shiny, uniformly dark patches that correlate with sun-exposed areas and worsen visibly on hot days. The patches are soft and slightly tacky on hot days. Oil contamination appears as irregular dark stains that don't change with temperature. A solvent rub on the surface — acetone on a white rag — picks up a light brown bituminous residue from bleeding patches and a dark petroleum stain from oil contamination.
Transport for NSW approved since 2009. We meet contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards for state and council road networks.
