Moorebank Intermodal's Container Hardstand Has Concrete Joints at 6-Metre Spacing — All Need Flexible Marking Before Racking Lines Are Applied
Moorebank Intermodal Terminal is one of Australia's largest container logistics facilities — rail-connected container movement at a scale that places enormous cyclic load on the concrete hardstand. The hardstand is designed with 6-metre slab panels and expansion joints at every panel boundary to manage thermal movement and the shock loading from heavy straddle carriers and reach stackers.
When the terminal operator asked us to mark container stacking zones and equipment lanes on the hardstand, the 6-metre joint spacing meant that aisle lines and zone boundaries crossed numerous joints. Specifying rigid thermoplastic for the crossing lines would produce cracked marking at every joint within 12-24 months of heavy machine operation.
We specified flexible marking compound for all lines crossing slab joints and standard thermoplastic for the field markings within slab panels. The joint map was overlaid on the marking layout during planning to identify every crossing point. Approximately 35% of the total line length crossed joints — all in flexible compound.
Moorebank is south-western Sydney's intermodal logistics hub — Moorebank Avenue, Anzac Road, and the container logistics and industrial businesses. Transport NSW approved.

Straddle carriers and reach stackers impose wheel loads of 15-35 tonnes — significantly heavier than standard warehouse forklifts. At this loading, marking film experiences compressive and shear forces that standard road marking thermoplastic isn't designed for. We specify heavy-duty thermoplastic with higher binder content for intermodal hardstand applications — not standard road marking Grade A, but a heavier-duty formulation rated for heavy vehicle hardstands.
Container stacking zone boundaries are typically marked with continuous yellow border lines 100mm wide defining the zone perimeter, with directional arrows indicating the stacking orientation. Bay numbering or zone identification is stencilled inside the boundary. Equipment lanes between stacking zones use hatching or solid colour to indicate the clear-way requirement. The specific configuration is confirmed with the terminal's operations team and port safety officer.
Under intermodal heavy vehicle loading, hardstand marking typically needs assessment every 2-3 years and selective replacement of high-wear zones (equipment lane entries, turning areas) every 3-4 years. Full hardstand remark cycles are typically 5-7 years depending on container volume. The flexible joint compound zones need more frequent assessment — typically every 2-3 years — because joint movement is ongoing.
