Sydney Airport Terminal Carparks Have Extremely High Vehicle Turnover — Short-Pay Stations Limit Bay Width Options
Sydney Airport's terminal carparks at Mascot operate at some of Australia's highest vehicle turnover rates — short-term drop-off and pick-up traffic cycling through continuously. The carpark infrastructure includes pay station barriers at specific bay entry points that were installed when the carparks were originally designed. Repositioning pay stations to allow wider bays would require significant infrastructure work.
A Mascot airport terminal carpark remark was straightforward except for the accessible bay update — the proposed new accessible bay locations needed to be within the pay station system's physical boundary zones. Accessible bays can't have a pay station barrier between them and the path-of-travel entry point.
We mapped the pay station barrier positions against the proposed accessible bay locations before confirming the layout. Two originally proposed accessible bay positions were within pay station barrier zones — we relocated them to adjacent bays outside the barrier line. The path-of-travel from the relocated bays remained compliant. The pay station infrastructure map is now part of the standard pre-marking assessment for Mascot airport carpark scopes.
Mascot is Sydney Airport's commercial and terminal precinct — Botany Road, O'Riordan Street, and the aviation support businesses. Transport NSW approved.

Yes. Sydney Airport terminal, Botany Road commercial, and O'Riordan Street carparks are part of our inner south schedule. Pay station barriers require vehicle stop-and-go interaction to enter and exit the bay — the driver must stop at the barrier, process payment or ticket, and wait for the barrier to lift. For a mobility-impaired driver using a wheelchair or mobility device, negotiating a barrier interaction while managing the vehicle is significantly more difficult and may be impractical. Accessible bays must have unobstructed vehicle access — barrier-free entry — to meet AS/NZS 2890.6 requirements.
Sydney Airport is operated under a Commonwealth lease and follows federal disability access standards under the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport and the Disability Discrimination Act. The specific requirements for airport terminal carparks reflect the transport function — accessible bays must be closest to terminal entry points and must have unobstructed path-of-travel to the terminal entrance. We confirm applicable standards with the airport's facilities management team.
Airport terminal short-term carparks have very high vehicle entry and exit frequency — turning, stopping, and accelerating create concentrated abrasion in entry lanes and turning circles. Thermoplastic in these zones typically lasts 3-4 years rather than the 5-7 years on lower-turnover commercial carparks. We specify thermoplastic throughout the Mascot airport terminal carparks rather than a mixed product approach, and recommend a 3-year condition assessment cycle.
Transport for NSW approved since 2009. We meet contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards for state and council road networks. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity — certificates available on request. All road marking in Mascot is completed to AS 1742.3 with retroreflective thermoplastic to AS/NZS 1906.3. You receive as-built photos, a compliance statement, and material certification on every job. We also cover Rosebery, Zetland, Alexandria on the same schedule.
