Cronulla's Ocean-Facing Carparks Have the Most Aggressive Salt Exposure in the Sutherland Shire — Double Wash Standard
Cronulla is Sydney's only ocean beach suburb — directly fronting the Tasman Sea rather than the sheltered waters of Port Phillip Bay or Moreton Bay. The open ocean exposure produces significantly higher salt aerosol generation than bay-facing coastal locations. Carparks on Cronulla Street and the Kingsway strip, within 200 metres of the beach, accumulate chloride contamination at a rate comparable to Fremantle or Newcastle.
A Cronulla Street beachside retail carpark in service for 11 years had pull-off values of 0.9-1.1 MPa after standard preparation — well below threshold. Single chloride wash: 1.2-1.4 MPa — still marginal. Double chloride wash: 1.6 MPa across all sections. The open ocean exposure had loaded the concrete with chloride contamination that required the most aggressive protocol in our coastal toolkit.
Cronulla ocean-facing carparks now get the double wash as standard. We don't attempt single wash first and see if it's adequate — the open ocean exposure at Cronulla consistently produces contamination levels that only the double protocol resolves. It saves a test-fail-retreat cycle and gets the job done in one session.
Cronulla is the Sutherland Shire's Tasman Sea beachside hub — Cronulla Street, the Kingsway, and the coastal retail and community businesses. Transport NSW approved.

Yes. Cronulla Street beachside retail and Kingsway commercial carparks are part of our Sutherland Shire schedule. The Tasman Sea at Cronulla has full Southern Ocean fetch from the south-east — wave heights of 1.5-3m are common in south-easterly swells, generating significant salt aerosol. Bay-facing sites like Frankston (Port Phillip Bay) or Redland Bay (Moreton Bay) have wave heights below 0.5m in typical conditions. The higher wave energy at Cronulla produces 3-5x higher salt aerosol generation rates. A 10-year-old Cronulla carpark has accumulated chloride contamination equivalent to a 25-35 year old bay-facing carpark.
Ocean-facing carparks within 300 metres of the beach consistently require the double wash. Carparks sheltered by buildings or topography at greater distances may be adequately treated with a single wash — we pull-off test after the first wash and proceed to the second if values are still below 1.5 MPa. For carparks we've assessed previously and know require the double wash, we go directly to the double protocol rather than testing after the first pass.
Chloride contamination continues to accumulate between remark cycles. For Cronulla ocean-facing carparks, a 4-5 year remark cycle rather than the standard 6-7 years for inland carparks is appropriate — the contamination builds faster and the marking weathers faster under the aggressive UV and salt environment. The double wash at each remark cycle keeps the contamination level manageable.
