Reservoir's Mid-Ring Industrial Concrete Is Often Fully Carbonated — Acid Etch Produces No Reaction on Carbonated Surfaces
Reservoir's industrial building stock from the 1960s-1980s often has concrete floors that are fully carbonated. Carbonation is the gradual conversion of calcium hydroxide in concrete to calcium carbonate through atmospheric CO2 absorption — a natural process that takes decades but produces a denser, less reactive concrete surface.
Fully carbonated concrete doesn't respond to standard acid etch — the calcium carbonate surface has already been converted and the acid produces minimal bubbling. A facility manager in Reservoir saw our crew apply acid etch with virtually no fizzing response and assumed we'd used a weak solution. We hadn't — the surface was simply non-reactive due to carbonation.
The solution for carbonated concrete is mechanical grinding to CSP-1 or CSP-2 rather than acid etching. Grinding cuts through the carbonated layer and exposes fresh, reactive concrete below that primers can bond to. Pull-off after grinding on the Reservoir floor: 1.7 MPa — the same as we'd expect on fresh concrete.
Reservoir is Darebin's northern industrial and commercial hub — High Street retail, Spring Street commercial, and the manufacturing and trade businesses of Melbourne's established inner north. VicRoads approved.

A phenolphthalein indicator test confirms carbonation — the indicator solution turns pink in uncarbonated concrete (pH above 9) and remains colourless in carbonated concrete (pH below 9). We apply the indicator to a freshly broken chip of concrete at the surface. Colourless throughout the depth of the chip confirms full carbonation. Pink at depth but colourless at the surface indicates partial carbonation with a carbonated outer layer over uncarbonated concrete below.
No — properly prepared carbonated concrete performs identically to properly prepared fresh concrete for marking purposes. Grinding removes the carbonated layer and exposes the underlying concrete that primers bond to normally. The carbonation of the surface layer is irrelevant once it's been physically removed. Pull-off values on ground carbonated concrete are consistent with values on fresh concrete prepared by the same method.
In a 40-50 year old industrial building in Melbourne's inner north, carbonation typically extends 8-15mm from the surface. CSP-1 grinding removes approximately 0.5-1mm — not enough to clear a deep carbonated layer. CSP-2 grinding removes approximately 2-3mm. For significant carbonation depth, a more aggressive grind or multiple passes may be needed. We measure carbonation depth during assessment to specify the appropriate grind depth.
