Scoresby's Technology Facilities Use Raised Floor Systems — Marking the Transition Zones Requires Care
Scoresby's technology park facilities sometimes use raised access floor systems in server room and data centre areas — modular panels on pedestals above the structural slab, creating a void for cable and air management. Where these raised floor areas transition to standard concrete floors in adjacent workshop or logistics areas, there's a step that needs marking.
A Ferntree Gully Road technology facility had a step-down of 120mm at the transition from raised floor to concrete — significant enough to be a trip hazard but small enough to be easy to miss. The step edge needed high-visibility hazard marking: yellow and black chevrons on the raised floor side, a yellow continuous border on the concrete side.
The challenge: the raised floor panels are removable tiles, not a fixed surface. Adhesive marking on removable tiles lifts when the tiles are removed for maintenance. We used painted marking on the raised floor side — applied with a brush rather than a machine, onto the individual tile surfaces — and standard thermoplastic on the concrete side.
Scoresby is Knox's Ferntree Gully Road technology and industrial corridor — manufacturing, distribution, and technology businesses. VicRoads approved.

Under AS 1742.2 and workplace safety guidance from Safe Work Australia, step edges above 50mm that create a trip or fall risk should be marked with high-visibility hazard marking. Yellow and black chevrons on the upper surface indicate the step edge and direct attention downward. The continuous yellow border on the lower level confirms the step boundary from below. WorkSafe Victoria's Code of Practice for Workplace Falls provides guidance on the specific marking requirements.
Thermoplastic bonds well to the surface of raised floor tiles when they're in place — the issue is that tiles are regularly removed for cable management and maintenance, which would damage or remove the marking. Painted marking on individual tiles is preferred because it's applied at lower film thickness and maintains adhesion even through repeated tile removal and replacement cycles. Thermoplastic is reserved for the fixed concrete sections.
A 120mm step is significant for manual pallet trucks but typically manageable for powered forklifts with adequate ramp or transition plates. If forklifts regularly cross the transition zone, a ramped transition plate should be assessed rather than relying on marking alone to manage the hazard. We note significant step heights in our assessment and advise on whether marking alone is sufficient or whether a physical transition solution should be considered.
