Knoxfield Manufacturing Floors Have Press Oil and Metalworking Fluid Contamination in Tool Paths — Very Different From Standard Oil
Knoxfield has a significant precision manufacturing presence — metal pressing, CNC machining, and tool-and-die operations. These facilities use metalworking fluids (MWF) — water-soluble cutting oils and coolants — rather than petroleum oils. MWF has a complex chemistry: water, mineral oil, emulsifiers, biocides, and corrosion inhibitors. The water fraction means it absorbs into concrete differently from petroleum.
A Stud Road precision machining facility had MWF contamination concentrated in the tool path zones under and around CNC machines. Pull-off after alkaline degreasing: 1.2 MPa in the tool path zones. The emulsifier content in MWF had altered the concrete surface chemistry — the degreasing removed the oil fraction but left emulsifier residues.
Hot water extraction (85°C) after alkaline degreasing removed the emulsifier residues that cold alkaline degreasing couldn't reach. Re-test after hot extraction and 48-hour drying: 1.6 MPa. The sequential protocol — alkaline degreaser for oil, hot extraction for emulsifier residues — addressed both contamination fractions.
Knoxfield is Knox City's Stud Road and Ferntree Gully Road precision manufacturing hub. VicRoads approved.

We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability. Fixed pricing, VicRoads approved. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability. Every Knoxfield quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. VicRoads approved for all road and carpark marking requiring authority sign-off.
MWF contains two incompatible contamination fractions: the oil fraction responds to alkaline degreasing; the emulsifier fraction is water-soluble but requires hot water to remove from the concrete pore structure at adequate depth. Standard cold-water rinsing after degreasing removes surface emulsifiers but leaves deep pore residues. The hot extraction step (85°C) drives hot water into the pore structure and carries the emulsifier out — the same principle as hot alkaline degreasing for oils but adapted for water-soluble contamination.
MWF deposition continues throughout facility operation. The next marking cycle will need the same two-stage protocol if MWF use continues in the same areas. The contamination builds up over years of operation and the extent of the affected zone may increase. Routine floor cleaning between marking cycles — sweeping MWF spills and periodically hot-washing the tool path zones — reduces the depth of contamination and may shorten the treatment time at the next remark.
Yes. The non-contaminated areas (storage aisles, perimeter walkways, entry zones) can be marked in a first session while the MWF treatment protocol is applied to the tool path zones. The MWF treatment, drying, and re-testing typically takes 5-7 days. The tool path zones are marked in a follow-up session after the treatment is confirmed by pull-off test.
