Campbellfield's Automotive Assembly Facilities Have Paint Booth Overspray Residue That Requires Specific Identification Before Grinding
Campbellfield has a long history of automotive assembly and component manufacturing. Some facilities have paint booth operations where isocyanate-based two-pack automotive paint is used — and booth overspray, despite filtration, can settle on adjacent floor surfaces over years of operation. Isocyanate compounds are respiratory sensitisers: grinding dried isocyanate-containing paint residue generates hazardous dust.
A Barry Road automotive component facility asked us to remark their production floor adjacent to a paint booth area. The floor in the booth-adjacent zone had a light spray mist residue with a slightly glossy, uneven appearance. Before grinding, we requested the Safety Data Sheets for the paint booth products. The topcoat was a two-pack isocyanate-cured automotive coating.
We submitted a SWMS to the facility manager specifying half-face respirators with P2/A2 combination cartridges for the grinding operation in the booth-adjacent zone, wet grinding with vacuum extraction, and prompt containment of the grinding waste. The facility manager approved the SWMS. The isocyanate residue zone was ground and marked safely.

WorkSafe Victoria guidelines for isocyanate-containing dust exposure require P2 particulate filtration combined with A2 organic vapour cartridges — a combination half-face respirator. P2 alone is insufficient because residual isocyanate monomer may also be present as vapour, not just particulate. The combination cartridge addresses both hazards. All crew members in the grinding zone wear the combination respirator throughout the grinding operation.
The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the topcoat material used in the paint booth will identify the curing agent chemistry. Two-pack polyurethane and two-pack epoxy coatings that use isocyanate hardeners list isocyanate compounds in the hazardous ingredient section of the SDS. The facility's safety officer or paint booth operator can provide the current SDS for the topcoat material. If the residue is not removed, it creates a low-adhesion interface between the concrete and the primer — the same as any other surface coating contamination. Once the residue is removed by grinding (with the appropriate safety controls), the exposed concrete surface bonds normally with primer. The safe grinding protocol doesn't change the marking performance outcome — it just manages the dust hazard during the preparation step.
