Virginia's Produce and Cold Storage Cluster Has Ammonia Refrigerant — Know Before You Work in the Vicinity
Virginia has a significant cluster of produce cold storage facilities using ammonia refrigerant systems — a common and efficient refrigerant for large-scale cold storage. Ammonia is extremely effective as a refrigerant but creates specific safety considerations for contractors working in or adjacent to ammonia-cooled facilities.
A Virginia produce distributor asked us to mark their internal floor. The facility used ammonia refrigerant with the compressor room adjacent to the main cold storage area we were working in. Before commencing work, we requested the site's emergency response plan for ammonia release, confirmed the location of emergency shutoffs and the muster point, and briefed our crew.
We also confirmed that our acid etch preparation chemicals (hydrochloric acid) were stored separately from any ammonia areas — mixing ammonia and hydrochloric acid creates ammonium chloride fumes. Standard safety precaution that we treat as non-negotiable in ammonia refrigerant facilities.
Virginia is Brisbane's inner northern produce and industrial hub — Robinson Road, Sandgate Road, and the cold storage and logistics businesses. TMR approved.

We require the site's ammonia emergency response plan, location of all emergency shutoff valves, muster point location, and confirmation that the refrigeration system is in normal operation (no active leak indications) before commencing. Our crew is briefed on the specific emergency procedures for that site — not generic ammonia awareness but the site-specific plan. We also confirm our hydrochloric acid etch products are stored and used away from any ammonia system components.
Ammonia in the ambient air of a cold store doesn't significantly affect cured epoxy or thermoplastic marking. The concern is during preparation — hydrochloric acid (used for etching) reacts with ammonia to produce ammonium chloride fumes if the two come into contact. We keep acid etch products well away from ammonia system components and ventilate the work area adequately during acid application. Once the etch is neutralised and rinsed, the risk is eliminated.
Depends on the floor operating temperature. Not all Virginia cold stores operate at the same temperature — some run at 2-4°C (fruit and vegetable cool rooms) while others run at -18 to -25°C (frozen goods). Above 10°C floor temperature, standard epoxy cures adequately. Below 10°C, low-temperature cure epoxy is specified. We measure the actual floor temperature at the time of marking rather than relying on the facility's nominal operating temperature.
TMR Queensland approved since 2009. We meet contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards for state and council road networks. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity — certificates available on request. All road marking in Virginia is completed to AS 1742.3 with retroreflective thermoplastic to AS/NZS 1906.3. You receive as-built photos, a compliance statement, and material certification on every job. We also cover Geebung, Zillmere, Northgate on the same schedule.
