Acacia Ridge's Rail Freight Terminal Has Concrete Loading Dock Floors Contaminated With Coal Fines — Not Just Petroleum
Acacia Ridge hosts Queensland's major rail freight terminal and intermodal operations. Coal is one of the significant freight types handled — container-based coal fines in transit from Queensland mines. Coal fines escape from containers and accumulate on loading dock concrete floors, creating a black carbonaceous contamination that standard degreasing doesn't remove effectively.
Coal fines are carbon-based but not petroleum-based — alkaline petroleum degreasing has limited effect. A Bradman Street freight facility had loading dock floor sections with coal fine contamination that had built up to 3-4mm depth in corners and low-flow areas. Pull-off after standard preparation: 0.9 MPa in the coal fine zones.
High-pressure water blasting at 4,000 PSI with a rotary nozzle cleared the surface and near-surface coal fines from the concrete pores. Followed by acid etch and primer: pull-off 1.6 MPa. The water blasting was more effective than any chemical approach — the coal fines responded to mechanical force rather than chemistry.

Alkaline and solvent degreasers are designed to emulsify and remove organic oils and fats. Coal fines are inorganic carbon — they don't contain the fatty acid chains or hydrocarbon fractions that respond to degreasing chemistry. The degreasers can remove any oil contamination associated with the coal fines but leave the coal particles themselves. High-pressure water mechanically dislodges the coal particles from the concrete pore structure without relying on chemistry.
4,000 PSI is within the range that cleans concrete without damaging it — standard concrete has compressive strength of 25-40 MPa which is far above the surface pressure from a 4,000 PSI water stream. We use a rotary nozzle that distributes the water blast across a circular pattern rather than a focused stream, further reducing the pressure per unit area. The cleaned surface has a CSP-1 profile from the water blast action — suitable for primer application without additional acid etching in most cases.
Coal fine slurry generated during water blasting is a managed waste stream — it contains carbon particulate but not the BTEX compounds associated with petroleum facilities. The slurry must be collected and disposed of rather than allowing it to enter stormwater drains — coal fines are an environmental contaminant in waterways. We use temporary bunding around the work area to collect the slurry for disposal. Worker protection during water blasting includes waterproof PPE and eye protection against spray.
