Henderson's Boat Building Facilities Have Fibreglass Resin Contamination That Standard Protocols Can't Remove
Henderson is Australia's largest marine industrial precinct — commercial shipbuilding, naval vessel construction, and recreational boat manufacturing all concentrated around the Cockburn Sound industrial waterfront. Fibreglass boat building uses polyester and epoxy resins that cure to extremely hard, chemically resistant films. Resin spills on concrete floors create a surface contamination that mechanical grinding is the only practical solution for.
A Henderson boat building facility had fibreglass resin splash and drip contamination across the lay-up area floor. The resin patches were hard, well-adhered, and slightly raised above the concrete surface. Chemical degreasers had no effect — cured fibreglass resin is solvent-resistant by design.
Selective grinding of the resin patches using an angle grinder with a diamond cup wheel removed the resin down to bare concrete. The ground zones were then acid etched and primed normally. For an 800 square metre Henderson boat building floor with scattered resin patches across approximately 15% of the area, the selective grinding took approximately 2.5 hours before the preparation and marking session could commence.

Yes. Fibreglass resin grinding generates glass fibre dust and cured resin particles — both are respiratory irritants. We use P2 respiratory protection during grinding, and vacuum extraction attached to the angle grinder where possible to capture dust at source. Workers in the vicinity during grinding should also wear P2 respirators. The facility's safety manager should be advised of the grinding scope before the session to ensure adequate respiratory controls are in place for all personnel in the area.
Cured fibreglass resin is an excellent substrate for some coating systems — boatbuilders apply antifouling and topcoats directly to fibreglass hulls successfully. However, road marking products are not designed for fibreglass substrates. The chemistry and film thickness are optimised for concrete. Without grinding, the marking product bonds to the fibreglass resin rather than the concrete below, and the fibreglass patch's own adhesion to the concrete may be inadequate under forklift load.
Resin catch trays under lay-up work areas, plastic sheeting on the floor during laminating operations, and immediate cleanup of resin drips before they cure are the most effective prevention measures. Cured fibreglass resin is much harder to remove than uncured resin — wet resin wipes up quickly; cured resin requires grinding. The lay-up area floor can also be covered with a sacrificial plastic sheet for the duration of a laminating project and removed with any drips it has collected.
