Burton's Port Wakefield Road Logistics Facilities Have Concrete Affected by Magnesium Chloride From Winter Road De-Icing Operations
Burton sits on the Port Wakefield Road, a major northern arterial that is treated with magnesium chloride during frost and ice events in Adelaide's cooler months. Vehicles entering the Burton logistics precinct from Port Wakefield Road track magnesium chloride into the warehouse and carpark concrete — a different chloride source from coastal salt aerosol but the same adhesion mechanism.
A Port Wakefield Road logistics facility had pull-off values of 1.1-1.3 MPa in the first 20 metres of floor from the main entry — the zone where vehicles from the road bring in the most de-icing residue. Pull-off in the interior zones, away from the entry: 1.7 MPa. The chloride contamination was entry-concentrated.
The standard chloride wash protocol was applied to the entry zones — dilute sodium hypochlorite after acid etch, thorough rinse. Re-test: 1.6 MPa. The same protocol used for coastal salt contamination worked equally well for road de-icing salt contamination. The entry zone required 20 minutes of additional treatment for a strong result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Burton Port Wakefield Road logistics and Main North Road industrial facilities are part of our City of Salisbury northern schedule. Entry zone chloride wash on facilities where de-icing salt tracking is observed — road de-icing magnesium chloride tracks into facility entries and reduces adhesion in the same way as coastal salt contamination. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability. Fixed pricing, DPTI approved.
Both are chloride salts and both affect concrete surface chemistry in the same way — by reducing the calcium hydroxide content at the concrete surface through chloride exchange. Magnesium chloride is more aggressive than sodium chloride at equal concentrations because magnesium hydroxide has lower solubility than calcium hydroxide, but the practical difference at the concentrations tracked in from roads is minor. The same chloride wash protocol that addresses coastal salt contamination works equally well for road de-icing salt.
At the concentrations tracked in from road de-icing, magnesium chloride affects the surface chemistry rather than causing structural damage. Structural chloride damage (reinforcement corrosion) requires much higher concentrations over extended periods than road de-icing tracking creates. The adhesion issue we address is a surface chemistry effect, not a structural concern. Facilities in heavily salted road zones over many decades may warrant occasional chloride content testing of the concrete bulk, but this is a long-term maintenance consideration.
Entry matting and scraper mats at truck entry points capture some de-icing salt residue from tyres before it reaches the warehouse floor. Industrial rubber scraper mats with aggressive surface profiles are the most effective. They don't eliminate tracking but reduce the volume significantly. Wheel wash systems at the facility entry are the most effective solution for large vehicle operations where matting is impractical.
DPTI South Australia approved since 2009. We meet contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards for state and council road networks. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity — certificates available on request. All road marking in Burton is completed to AS 1742.3 with retroreflective thermoplastic to AS/NZS 1906.3. You receive as-built photos, a compliance statement, and material certification on every job. We also cover Edinburgh, Salisbury, Paralowie on the same schedule.
