Lonsdale's Marine Industry Floors Have Antifouling Paint Overspray That Requires Specialist Removal Before Marking
Lonsdale hosts one of South Australia's most active marine maintenance industries — boat building, antifouling, and hull maintenance for fishing and recreational vessels. Antifouling paint contains biocides (typically copper compounds) that make the paint toxic to marine growth. The same toxicity that prevents barnacles also makes antifouling paint a hazardous material on concrete floors when it needs to be removed.
A Lonsdale boat maintenance facility had antifouling paint overspray across their concrete workshop floor — years of accumulated spray from hull painting operations. The overspray had partially bonded to the concrete. Standard grinding would generate copper-containing dust requiring hazardous waste handling.
We used wet grinding with vacuum extraction rather than dry grinding — the wet process suppresses dust generation and the captured slurry is collected as hazardous waste for disposal. Pull-off on the wet-ground surface after acid etch: 1.7 MPa. Clean concrete, no copper dust hazard. The waste slurry was disposed of through a licensed hazardous waste contractor.
Lonsdale is Onkaparinga's Sherriffs Road marine and heavy industrial hub — one of South Australia's most active marine service precincts. DPTI approved.

Copper-based antifouling paints contain copper compounds (typically cuprous oxide) at concentrations that classify the cured material as a hazardous substance under the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme. Grinding generates fine copper-containing dust. Inhalation of copper dust at sufficient concentration can cause respiratory irritation and, at chronic exposure levels, systemic toxicity. Wet grinding with vacuum extraction controls the dust at source.
Wet grinding uses water at the grinding interface to suppress dust generation — the grinding slurry wets the dust particles before they can become airborne. Combined with vacuum extraction, the process captures the contaminated slurry rather than allowing dust to spread through the facility. The captured slurry is treated as hazardous waste. Dry grinding allows the copper dust to become airborne, requiring full respirator protection for all personnel in the building and generating hazardous airborne contamination.
The captured slurry is collected in sealed containers and disposed of through a licensed hazardous waste contractor. In South Australia, licensed hazardous waste facilities accept copper-containing paint waste. We arrange the hazardous waste disposal as part of the floor preparation scope — waste generation, collection, and disposal documentation are included in the as-built record for the facility's environmental compliance file.
