Gepps Cross Automotive Facilities Have Brake Fluid Contamination That Requires Different Treatment From Engine Oil or Hydraulic Fluid
Gepps Cross has significant automotive industry presence — vehicle storage, preparation, and distribution facilities where brake fluid handling is routine. Brake fluid is glycol-based rather than petroleum-based — it's water-soluble and hygroscopic, which makes it behave differently from petroleum contamination on concrete floors.
A Gepps Cross vehicle preparation facility had floor sections where brake fluid spills were common during vehicle inspection. Standard petroleum degreasing was applied — it cleared the visible fluid but left a residue because brake fluid's glycol chemistry doesn't emulsify with petroleum-based degreasers.
Brake fluid contamination requires water-based cleaning — a thorough hot water wash with a detergent that targets glycol compounds rather than petroleum. After two hot water wash passes and 48-hour drying, pull-off reached 1.6 MPa in the previously problematic zones. The chemistry mattered — the right cleaning agent for the right contamination.
Gepps Cross is Port Adelaide Enfield's Main North Road automotive and industrial hub — Phillip Highway, and the vehicle and industrial businesses. DPTI approved.

Petroleum degreasers work by emulsifying petroleum-based oils and fats in a water-degreaser solution. Brake fluid is polyethylene glycol-based — it has no petroleum component for the degreaser to emulsify. The degreaser can dissolve some of the glycol surface film but leaves glycol residues in the concrete pore structure that petroleum-based chemistry can't reach. Water-based hot cleaning targets the glycol compounds directly because glycol is highly water-soluble.
Fresh brake fluid is amber-coloured and has a distinct slightly sweet smell. Dried or aged brake fluid on concrete may be colourless or pale yellow — harder to identify visually. A water test is informative: glycol-contaminated concrete absorbs water unusually quickly (glycol is hygroscopic) compared to petroleum-contaminated concrete which beads water. The specific pull-off failure pattern (low values that standard degreasing doesn't fix) is the key diagnostic.
Glycol (brake fluid) contamination is generally easier to remediate than deep petroleum oil contamination because glycol is water-soluble. Hot water washing can draw glycol from several millimetres into the pore structure, whereas petroleum oils require solvent or alkaline emulsification and may penetrate deeper before becoming immovable. The key is using the correct cleaning agent — water for glycol, alkaline degreaser or solvent for petroleum.
