Kings Meadows Retail Carparks Sit at Higher Elevation Than Launceston CBD — Cold Air Pooling Creates Frost Risk Even in Late Spring
Kings Meadows is on Launceston's eastern plateau — elevated above the Tamar Valley floor where Launceston CBD sits. Cold air drains off the plateau overnight and the elevated position also experiences its own frost formation from clear-sky radiation cooling. The result: Kings Meadows can experience frost and cold surface temperatures in September and October when the CBD at lower elevation is clear.
We scheduled a Kings Meadows shopping centre carpark remark for a late September date — nominally early spring, ambient conditions mild. Surface temperature at 8am: 4°C. A radiation frost had occurred overnight at the exposed plateau site. The lower sections of the carpark near the building were 9°C (warmer from the building's thermal mass) but the open exposed sections were well below our minimum.
We started on the building-adjacent sections and worked outward as the surface warmed through the morning. By 10am all sections had reached 10°C and the full carpark was completed by 1pm. The September frost risk is something we now plan for in all Kings Meadows spring sessions — a 9am start rather than 8am, and a surface temperature check before the first line regardless of the calendar date.
Kings Meadows is Launceston's eastern plateau retail hub — the Kings Meadows shopping precinct, Hobart Road commercial, and the medical and community businesses. TAS Roads approved.

Kings Meadows sits approximately 80-120 metres higher than the Tamar Valley floor where Launceston CBD is located. This elevation difference is enough to produce noticeably colder overnight minimum temperatures under clear-sky radiation cooling conditions, and the plateau's exposure to south-easterly winds adds wind chill that the valley-sheltered CBD doesn't experience. The temperature difference is most pronounced on still, clear nights — the classic frost formation conditions.
The Bureau of Meteorology frost probability maps and overnight minimum temperature forecasts for Launceston East provide guidance. A forecast below 5°C at the Launceston East station is a good indicator of frost risk at Kings Meadows. However, these are probabilistic — the actual surface temperature at your specific site depends on local factors including building shelter, paving albedo, and wind. We measure on the day rather than relying on forecasts alone.
Yes — building-adjacent sections can be 3-5°C warmer than open exposed sections of the same carpark on a frost morning. The building's thermal mass radiates heat overnight, moderating the frost formation in its immediate vicinity. This creates a temperature gradient across the carpark that we use to sequence the marking session — start at the warm building-adjacent zones and progress outward as the exposed sections warm up.
