Devonport's Bass Strait Exposure Creates More Aggressive Salt Conditions Than the Derwent Estuary at Hobart
Devonport's foreshore is directly exposed to Bass Strait — open ocean conditions with high wave energy and significant salt aerosol generation during the frequent south-westerly weather events that characterise north-west Tasmania. The salt deposition rate at Devonport's waterfront is materially higher than at Hobart's sheltered Derwent River foreshore.
A Formby Road logistics facility adjacent to the Spirit of Tasmania terminal had concrete floor sections in the seaward-facing loading dock area with pull-off values of 0.9-1.1 MPa after standard acid etch preparation — significantly below threshold. The Bass Strait exposure had loaded the concrete with chloride contamination over the facility's 12-year operational life.
Double chloride wash — two passes of the sodium hypochlorite wash protocol with fresh water rinse between each — brought pull-off to 1.4-1.5 MPa in the loading dock zones. The double wash was necessary because single pass values were still below 1.4 MPa. The inland sections of the facility required only the standard single chloride wash.
Devonport is north-west Tasmania's major port hub — the Spirit of Tasmania terminal, Formby Road commercial, and the industrial businesses. TAS Roads approved.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Devonport Spirit of Tasmania precinct, Formby Road commercial, and north-west Tasmania industrial facilities are part of our schedule. Bass Strait double chloride wash protocol for high-exposure port facilities — open ocean salt deposition at Devonport is significantly more aggressive than sheltered estuary locations. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability. Fixed pricing, TAS Roads approved.
Bass Strait is open ocean with high wave energy and consistent south-westerly wind fetch from the Southern Ocean. Salt aerosol generation and deposition rates are significantly higher than the Derwent River at Hobart, which is a sheltered estuary with lower wind exposure. A Devonport waterfront facility accumulates chloride contamination at roughly twice the rate of a comparable Hobart waterfront facility. The double wash protocol for Devonport reflects this higher accumulation rate.
The chloride wash works by chemical exchange — the hypochlorite solution binds to the chloride ions in the concrete pore structure and the rinse water carries them out. A single wash removes most surface-layer chloride but leaves residual ions deeper in the pores. A second wash after the first rinse reaches the chloride that the first wash loosened but didn't fully remove. Two shorter washes with a rinse between them are more effective than one extended wash.
Vehicle staging areas at ferry terminals need robust directional marking and bay designation marking that can withstand very high vehicle turnover — particularly during Spirit of Tasmania embarkation and disembarkation surges. Heavy thermoplastic is specified for all high-turnover staging lanes and directional arrows. We confirm the staging area layout with the terminal operator before any marking commences — layouts can change between sailing schedules.
Department of State Growth Tasmania approved since 2009. We meet contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards for state and council road networks. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity — certificates available on request. All road marking in Devonport is completed to AS 1742.3 with retroreflective thermoplastic to AS/NZS 1906.3. You receive as-built photos, a compliance statement, and material certification on every job. We also cover Latrobe, Port Sorell, Ulverstone on the same schedule.
