East Arm Port Logistics Facilities Operate Through Darwin's Wet Season — Timing Marking Sessions Around Monsoonal Rain Is Essential
East Arm hosts Darwin Port's major logistics and container handling operations. Darwin's wet season (November-April) delivers over 1,600mm of annual rainfall, most of it in intense monsoonal events. External carpark and hardstand marking during the wet season requires more careful session timing than any other Australian location we operate in.
A port logistics facility in East Arm needed their external hardstand marked in January — peak wet season. The session window: a clear morning forecast following a dry evening. We monitored the Bureau of Meteorology radar from 11pm, identified a 12-hour clear window from 2am, mobilised at 4am, and completed the external hardstand by 2pm before the next storm system arrived.
The session plan included a weather abort protocol — if radar showed a developing system within 2 hours of completion, we'd leave the marked surface and return to complete any remaining sections in the next clear window. In the event, we completed in the single window. Total marking in wet season Darwin requires this level of real-time weather management — the consequences of rain on uncured thermoplastic are severe.
East Arm is Darwin Port's southern logistics corridor — East Arm Road, Marine Drive, and the port and industrial businesses. NT Government approved.

Thermoplastic applied to an external surface that is then rained on before the glass beads have set (typically 20-30 minutes) has the beads washed off the surface. The thermoplastic itself isn't damaged by rain once it has cooled below its application temperature, but the retroreflectivity from glass beads is largely lost. The affected sections need to be reheated and new beads applied, or in severe cases, the thermoplastic section needs to be re-applied. This is expensive and disruptive — hence the radar monitoring protocol.
Yes — internal warehouse and facility floors are not affected by wet season weather directly. The only wet season consideration for internal floors is that incoming vehicles may track water onto the floor from external rain, creating surface moisture issues in entry zones. We assess surface moisture at the entry zones during wet season sessions and extend the preparation time in these areas if needed.
East Arm Darwin Port has port security requirements — contractor induction, vehicle and personnel credentialing, and restricted area access protocols. These apply regardless of season. For a 4am wet season session start, we pre-arrange contractor vehicle access passes and personnel credentials with the port security team at least 48 hours before the session. Port security doesn't delay sessions that are correctly pre-arranged.
