Fyshwick's Trade Facilities Have Extreme Canberra Winter Cold — Floor Temperatures Can Stay Below 5°C All Day in June and July
Fyshwick is in the Jerrabomberra valley — one of Canberra's coldest locations due to cold air drainage from the surrounding ranges. In June and July, Fyshwick's industrial buildings can have internal floor temperatures below 5°C throughout the entire day, even when ambient outdoor temperatures reach 10-12°C by midday. The thermal mass of the concrete slab holds the overnight cold long after the air has warmed.
We were engaged for a Barrier Street trade facility floor in late July. Outdoor temperature by 10am: 11°C. Floor temperature in the centre of the building, away from any heaters: 4°C. Application of standard thermoplastic at 4°C is not viable — the product cools too fast for glass bead embedment.
Two electric radiant heaters positioned 2 metres above the floor in the coldest zone, running for 3 hours, raised the floor temperature to 10°C in a 60 square metre area. We marked that zone, moved the heaters to the next cold zone, and progressed through the facility. Total session time: 40% longer than a warm-weather session for the same floor, but completed in a single day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Fyshwick Ipswich Street and Barrier Street trade facilities are part of our ACT schedule. Floor temperature measured and radiant heating applied before thermoplastic on all June-August Fyshwick sessions — Canberra winter floor temperatures stay below the thermoplastic minimum all day in unheated industrial buildings. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability. Fixed pricing, ACT Government approved.
Typically 30-50% additional session time compared to a warm-weather session of the same floor area. Each heater zone requires 2-3 hours of heating before the floor reaches 10°C. We work in heated zones while the next zone is being warmed — so the total additional time is the heating time for the first zone plus the marking time for each zone, rather than heating the entire floor before starting. Efficient zone planning reduces the additional time significantly.
For zones up to 80-100 square metres, 2-3 electric radiant heaters rated 2-3kW each achieve 10°C within 2-3 hours in a typical Fyshwick industrial building. For larger zones or extremely cold days (below -3°C overnight), more heaters or longer preheat times are needed. Propane or gas-fired radiant heaters can heat larger areas faster, but require more safety management — electrical radiant heaters are simpler to use in a trade facility with standard power access.
September through April is the ideal window for Fyshwick floor marking — floor temperatures above 10°C without heating. October to March is the optimal period. May and August are marginal — heating may or may not be needed depending on the specific year's conditions. June and July consistently require heating. If the marking is flexible on timing, scheduling in the warmer months eliminates the heating protocol complexity and cost.
ACT Government approved since 2009. We meet contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards for state and council road networks. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity — certificates available on request. All road marking in Fyshwick is completed to AS 1742.3 with retroreflective thermoplastic to AS/NZS 1906.3. You receive as-built photos, a compliance statement, and material certification on every job. We also cover Mitchell, Hume, Beard on the same schedule.
