Bituminous Rejuvenator Applied to Asphalt Needs Full Cure Before Thermoplastic — Not Just Surface Dry

A Kings Meadows commercial carpark had been treated with a bituminous rejuvenator to restore surface flexibility and slow further oxidation of the aged asphalt. The rejuvenator supplier specified a 10-day full cure. The client asked us to mark on day 7, pointing out that the surface was dry to the touch and looked ready.

We marked on day 7. The thermoplastic bonded correctly at application and looked fine. Over the following two months, a slight darkening and edge softening appeared in the thermoplastic lines — the still-curing rejuvenator had continued to migrate through the asphalt surface and bled into the thermoplastic edges as it cured. The lines didn't fail but the edge quality deteriorated.

Surface dry is not the same as full cure for a penetrating bituminous rejuvenator. The rejuvenator continues to migrate through the asphalt binder after the surface appears dry — the migration is the mechanism by which it works. During this migration phase, it can penetrate the underside of any coating applied to the surface. Full cure means the migration has completed and the rejuvenator is stable.

Kings Meadows is Launceston's commercial and industrial fringe — trade businesses, small-format retail, and the Kings Meadows estate facilities. TAS Roads approved. Rejuvenator cure completion is confirmed in writing before thermoplastic marking on any Kings Meadows rejuvenator-treated asphalt.

Bituminous rejuvenators are low-viscosity petroleum-derived or bio-based oils that penetrate into the asphalt binder matrix by capillary action and diffusion. The surface dries first because the top layer completes its migration quickly. The deeper migration continues for days after the surface appears dry, as the rejuvenator works its way through the full asphalt thickness to reach the oxidised binder deep in the pavement.

The rejuvenator supplier's product data sheet specifies the full cure time — typically 7-14 days depending on temperature and product. Confirm the application date and temperature with the rejuvenator contractor, then check the supplier's cure specification. Do not mark until the full cure time has elapsed, regardless of surface appearance. Yes — rejuvenator-treated asphalt that has fully cured accepts thermoplastic adhesion normally. The treated asphalt is actually a better bonding substrate than heavily oxidised asphalt because the rejuvenator has restored surface flexibility and micro-texture. The timing is the only constraint.
