Drainage Gradients in Food Facility Floors Cause Thermoplastic to Run Downhill During Application
An Invermay food manufacturing facility had a floor with a designed drainage gradient across part of the production area — approximately 1:60 fall toward the drainage channels. This is standard in food processing environments for HACCP compliance cleaning. We marked the sloped section with standard thermoplastic at our normal application temperature.
Thermoplastic at 180-200°C is a hot fluid — similar viscosity to thick honey at application temperature. On a gradient, it has a tendency to run downhill slightly during the cooling phase before it sets. On a 1:60 floor, this produced a subtle run on the downhill edge of each line — 2-3mm of material accumulation on the downhill side and a slightly raised lip.
The fix for gradient floors is to apply thermoplastic at the lower end of the temperature range (closer to 175°C) to reduce fluidity, or to use a lower-viscosity thermoplastic formulation. Trowel application, which applies the material in a controlled pass and allows it to set before any run develops, is also an option for short line runs on gradients. We now identify floor gradients during assessment and specify the application method accordingly.
Invermay is Launceston's industrial north — Lindsay Street food manufacturing, logistics, and the trade businesses on the South Esk River corridor. TAS Roads approved. Floor gradient assessment is standard on every Invermay food facility and graded floor marking.

Floor gradient assessment and application method specification on every graded floor. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Invermay quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For the relevant state safety regulator improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
Gradients above approximately 1:80 begin to show thermoplastic run in warm application conditions. At 1:60 — the common HACCP cleaning gradient — run is consistent and visible. At 1:40 and above, run is pronounced and application method must be adjusted to manage it. We measure the floor gradient with a digital level during assessment for any sloped floor section. Line Marking Australia has been completing marking across Invermay and surrounds since 2009, with 5,000+ projects nationally. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity insurance, approved. Thermoplastic viscosity increases as temperature decreases — at 175°C it's thicker and more resistant to flow than at 200°C. Applying at the lower end of the range gives the material less time and less fluidity to run before setting. The trade-off is a shorter application window, which requires working faster. We calibrate application temperature and pace to the gradient in the assessment.
Not all sections. Processing areas and wash-down zones typically have 1:60 gradients. Storage, office, and dry warehouse areas are usually flat or near-flat. We measure the gradient in each zone and specify the application method accordingly — standard application for flat zones, adjusted for graded sections. Surface preparation is assessed before every Invermay warehouse job, not assumed. That means checking moisture content, surface pH, contamination, and existing coating compatibility before a product is specified. We've completed 5,000+ warehouse and industrial floor marking jobs since 2009, and we carry $20M public liability insurance. Completion documentation includes product data sheets, application records, and compliance certification.
