The Challenge: Worn Playground, Confusing Carpark, Term 1 Deadline

A primary school in Keysborough contacted us in November with a familiar story. Their playground markings had faded to nothing. Kids couldn't see the four-square lines. The basketball court was barely visible. And the hopscotch? Completely gone.

But the playground wasn't the only problem. The carpark had become a morning chaos zone. Parents were creating their own drop-off spots. Staff parking wasn't clearly marked. The kiss-and-drop zone was ignored because nobody could see where it was.

The school had one requirement: everything had to be ready before Term 1 started in late January. They wanted students to return to a fresh, vibrant campus.

Our Approach: Education Meets Safety, Colour Meets Compliance

We split the project into two phases: carpark first (the safety priority), playground second (the fun part). Both had to be done right.

Carpark Layout

Working with the school administration, we redesigned the carpark layout. 45 standard bays for parents and visitors. 12 designated staff bays (numbered for accountability). 2 accessible bays meeting AS/NZS 2890.6. A clearly marked kiss-and-drop zone with entry and exit arrows. Safety islands for students walking to the school entrance.

Playground Games Selection

The school wanted a mix of active games and educational elements. We provided: one full-size basketball court (meeting modified primary school dimensions), six four-square courts (the most requested game), three hopscotch designs (including an alphabet version for younger students), one number snake (1-100 for maths practice), and one Australian map outline (for geography lessons).

Material Selection

Playground markings take serious punishment from running feet and Australian sun. We used specialised playground paint with UV stabilisers to resist fading. Anti-slip additives went into all games in high-traffic areas. Carpark markings used standard line marking paint with waterborne formulation for environmental compliance.

Colour Scheme

School playgrounds should be vibrant. We used the school's house colours for the four-square courts (red, blue, green, yellow). The basketball court got regulation orange keys. Hopscotch alternated bright colours to make each square visible. The number snake used a rainbow progression from 1-100. Every colour was chosen for maximum visibility and durability.

The Results: Ready for Term 1, Engaged Students, Happy Parents

We finished with four days to spare before Term 1. The principal walked the finished site with us and couldn't stop smiling. Teachers were already planning outdoor lessons using the number snake and alphabet hopscotch.

The carpark transformation was equally successful. Morning drop-off chaos was replaced by orderly flow. Parents used the kiss-and-drop zone correctly because they could see it clearly. Staff had their own section. No more parking arguments.

The school sent us photos a few weeks into term. Kids were queuing for the four-square courts. The basketball court was in constant use. Mission accomplished.
